Policy on Equipment and Dress

Purpose

This policy outlines equipment and dress standards for all players and staff representing Ottawa Myers Automotive AAA (“Myers AAA”) on the U12 to U18 AAA teams. The goal is to ensure safety, uniformity, and professionalism in accordance with Hockey Canada (HC) and Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO) requirements.

Effective date

This policy is effective beginning 2026-05-14 and will be reviewed annually.

Equipment standards

  • All equipment and on-ice uniform must meet or exceed HC and HEO rules and standards. This includes full compliance with HC Rule 3.6 — Protective Equipment.
  • Helmet (i.e.: CSA-certified hockey helmet) must be mainly black and display official Myers AAA helmet stickers on both sides.
    • A CSA-certified facial protector must be sized and attached in such a way that the protector securely rests in the helmet’s j-clips so that movement is limited when the facial protector is struck from the front (i.e.: no cage hang).
    • The straps of the facial protector must be securely fastened to the helmet and be tight enough to always keep the protector in the j-clips.
    • The chin strap of the helmet must be securely fastened under the chin and in such a way as to prevent the helmet’s removal without undoing the strap.
    • Goalie masks/helmets must be either mainly black, mainly white, or feature creative designs that portray the general branding and colours of Myers AAA.
  • Neck guard (i.e.: BNQ-certified throat protector) must be always worn while on the ice or bench by anyone registered in minor hockey.
    • Goaltenders who wear an attachment to the mask or helmet designed to protect the throat, must still wear a throat protector.
  • Jerseys must be clean Myers AAA game jerseys (red or white) for games and association-or team practice jerseys for practices
    • Teams may develop their own practice jerseys with the Myers AAA logo and no other sponsor logos.
    • A Board-of-Governors-approved third jersey may be used for games (see policy exception requests).
  • Gloves must be association-issued unless a specific exception (see policy exception requests) is granted for:
    • Medical reasons (e.g., allergy to materials, note from physician or Nurse practitioner).
    • Accessibility needs (e.g., adaptive equipment for physical requirements).
    • Equipment availability (shortage/timing) or sizing issues.
    • All gloves used as an approved alternative must be all black, or mainly black with red accents.
  • Pant shells must be Myers AAA pant shells and must completely cover the pants beneath from the waist down (i.e.: pant cuffs should not extend beyond the shell cuffs).
  • Hockey socks must match the jersey (both white for home, and both dark for away)
    • Clear tape is the only colour of sock tape permitted.
  • Stickers or branding for other teams (e.g., league, spring, etc.) may not appear anywhere on the uniform. This includes equipment featuring main colours other than those specified in this policy (i.e.: black, red, white).

Off-ice dress requirements

  • Pre-game warm-up: Players are expected to wear Myers-AAA-branded apparel (e.g., trackpants/shorts, hoodies, t-shirts, jackets) for pre-game warm-ups.
  • Other off-ice activities (e.g.: fitness, classroom, formal events): dress is determined by the coach and will be communicated ahead of the activities.

Game-day dress requirements

  • Players: Game-day walk-in dress code for players is at the coach’s discretion and will be communicated at the start of the year and before tournaments.
  • Coaches: Myers-branded jacket or overcoat, no ball caps (toques are acceptable), collared shirt (tie optional), dress pants or khakis (no jeans), dressy shoes (no multi-coloured running shoes; however dressy solid-colour sports-style shoes are acceptable).
  • Trainers: Myers-branded jacket (provided), suitable footwear and attire for on-ice emergencies black pants (no jeans).

Policy exception requests

All requests for equipment or dress exceptions must be submitted in writing to the association Board of Governors. All exceptions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
